"America Online is known for its fierce protection of its "walled garden," that universe of chat, message boards, news and buddy lists available only to its 34 million subscribers. Now, America Online, a unit of AOL Time Warner Inc., is going to let some people peek inside.

"In an arrangement with Alexandria, Va., start-up PresenceWorks Inc. to be announced Thursday, America Online will let Web sites add a feature showing if a person is logged onto its instant messaging technology. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

"For example, an auction site can choose to show which of its bidders are online by displaying an icon of a light bulb switched on or off. That would essentially let viewers of the Web page know the online status of people inside the walled garden. Even people who don't have AOL instant-messaging software will be able to send messages to the AOL buddies that are online.

"Its something that's never been done before outside of an AOL property," says Matt Smith, founder and chief executive of PresenceWorks."

"America Online has struck a deal with a developer that could turn Web sites into vast instant messaging playgrounds, the companies said Thursday. "

"...Octave's software, designed for wireless carriers and telcos that will integrate MeetAbout into their teleconferencing services, uses technology from PresenceWorks Inc. to glean the information found in the buddy list to see if a user is available for a conference call via traditional phones or cell phones.

"The company's (Octave) MeetAbout technology lets you call a number and speak your own phone number and password (or enter them over the Net), then meeting alerts are dispatched to appropriate members of your buddy list, by e-mail (if time allows) or any instant messaging program. Through the use of ''presence'' technology, the system can detect where these people are located."
